FAQs for players

I haven’t taken any grade exams. Can I still join the NCO?

You do not have to have taken any grade exams to join the NCO. Your audition is the only thing which will count, so make sure you prepare well to give yourself the best chance. Your teacher will be able to help you.

Can I apply on more than one instrument?

Yes you can. You need to fill in a separate application form for each instrument and you will have a separate audition for each.

Auditions make me nervous. Do I have to do one?

Yes. This is to make it fair, so everybody has the same chance. Lots of people get nervous before auditions, but make sure you prepare well and try to stay calm. Your teacher will be able to help you. The adjudicators know what you are going through as they are used to doing auditions themselves, so they will be understanding.

I’m worried that I won’t know anyone else on the course.

There is no need to worry. Lots of children don’t know anyone else the first time that they come. NCO courses are a great way to meet other children who love playing music and a chance to make lasting friendships. Our staff are very friendly and want everyone to enjoy themselves. We would also encourage you to join your nearest Regional Orchestra to meet other NCO members who live near to you. Some of them will be going on the same residential course as you so you have chance to make friends before you go.

I’ve never played in an orchestra before. Is it very different to playing solos?

Playing in an orchestra is all about teamwork, working as part of a big group of people to create music. The conductor’s job is to keep everybody together, so make sure you watch him or her. For many of our young musicians the NCO is their first real experience of playing in an orchestra. Players usually get the hang of it pretty quickly and there are plenty of tutors around to help. Performing orchestral music is exciting and can be more fun than just playing on your own.

Who will be my tutor on the course?

We use different tutors every time. We are lucky to have some of the top music professionals from orchestras and specialist music schools throughout the UK. All of our tutors are highly trained and will help you to get the most out of your experience.

Do we do anything besides playing music on the course?

Yes! Obviously a lot of time is spent in rehearsals, both as a full orchestra and in sectionals, but there is some time for relaxing and playing games as well. Activities vary and depend on the weather, but can include swimming, sports and talent shows, as well as quieter activities.

It's my birthday during the course. Can my family visit me?

This may be possible during the afternoon break. Your parents should contact the NCO office to arrange this as visits are only allowed if permission has been given in advance.

My friends and family all want to see me perform. How many concerts will there be?

If you are in the Main or Under 13 Orchestra then you will have at least three concerts. If you are in the Under 12, Under 11 or Training Orchestra you will have one concert. Each Regional Orchestra also has one concert in the Summer. For more information on dates and venues, and to buy tickets, see our Concerts section.

What do I have to wear when I am taking part in an NCO concert?

There is a dress code for all children participating in an NCO concert.
