Roger Clarkson - Chief Executive Officer / Director of Music

Roger was appointed Director of Music of the NCO in the year 2000.
Born in Yorkshire, Roger comes from a family whose musical traditions stretch back over several generations. He started playing the trumpet at the age of six and acquired wide ranging knowledge of other orchestral instruments from other members of his family. During his seventeen years with the Royal Air Force Music Services Roger performed in nineteen countries, from Hong Kong to the Americas. During his RAF career, he studied with John Miller, then Professor of Trumpet at the Guildhall School of Music. He has played professionally with many ensembles across a wide variety of musical styles from opera to Big Band.
Prior to his appointment as Director of Music of the National Childrens Orchestra, Roger taught at Sherborne School for Girls, Taunton School and Wells Cathedral Music School. From 1995 to 1998 he was Head of Brass at the Gloucester Academy of Music and Performing Arts. Roger was also asked to start young Brass players in Bristol as part of an inner city project which he found both highly rewarding and fascinating.

Vivienne Price - Founder and Vice President

Founder and Vice President of the NCO orchestras, Vivienne Price was awarded an exhibition to the Royal College of Music when she was 16 where she studied violin with Herbert Kinsey and piano with Eric Harrison. Later, she studied violin with Sybil Eaton and Marjorie Lavers.
Vivienne's love of orchestras started early. While still at school, she formed the Ewell Young Musicians Orchestra which won many trophies and awards. In her teaching posts at Tiffin Girls' School (Kingston) and Central Foundation Girls' School (London), she formed and conducted the school orchestras. In 1959, she and her husband founded the Fitznells School of Music in Ewell, Surrey which built up a national reputation for string playing and junior orchestras. In fact, under Vivienne's direction, the Fitznells Orchestra twice won first place in the National Festival of Music for Youth.
All this activity led to Vivienne achieving her lifetime ambition in 1978 - that of forming a national children's orchestra. It is mainly through her personal dedication, skill and unflinching hard work that the NCO has grown to become the highly respected national institution that it is today.
Vivienne continues full-time work with the NCO
In the 1997 Birthday Honours list, Vivienne was made an MBE in recognition of her lifelong services to children's music.

Geraldine Jones - Administrator
Before Geraldine came to work for NCO, she had several careers starting as a history teacher. During her period teaching, she spent three years at Shaftesbury High School. After that she had a variety of jobs involving recruitment, work study and training. Amongst the more unusual jobs, she spent time as a shepherdess in Cornwall during the lambing season. Just before coming to NCO, she had a smallholding in Devon with suckler cows.
Geraldine has always maintained her interest in history and in her spare time writes articles about the area around her home in Axbridge near Cheddar. She also enjoys taking photographs for the NCO newsletters.
