Sizzling summer season announced

20 June 2010

The NCO has an exciting summer ahead with three concerts taking place around the country.

First up we have Cadogan Hall in London on 30 July. Our debut performance at this venue, we are very much looking forward to seeing what Main Orchestra will make of a more intimate setting. Home to the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the hall is renowned for its remarkable acoustic settings.

We are thrilled to be joined on this occasion by violinist Callum Smart as guest soloist. Callum has been enjoying recent fame after reaching the finals of two major competitions – BBC Young Musician of the Year and Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition. The programme for the evening comprises Sibelius’ Karelia Overture, Glazunov’s Violin Concerto and Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 3.

Barely pausing for breath, Main Orchestra will be straight on the road towards Bristol, where they will be performing at Colston Hall on 31 July. We are delighted that our guest soloist for this concert will be oboist Lavinia Redman, who was a woodwind finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. Lavinia will be dazzling the audience with a recent concerto from emerging composer Stephen Frost.

“Both Callum and Lavinia are former NCO members,” comments our Director of Music, Roger Clarkson, “and it is wonderful for me to see the impact that the NCO training has had on these talented young individuals. It is a great pleasure to invite them back to perform with us.”

The final part of our trilogy sees the Under 13 Orchestra on stage at Town Hall, Birmingham on 14 August. Fresh from the fireworks of the 1812 Overture, which they performed with style earlier this year, our Under 13s have an action-packed programme of dramatic film music and contemporary works. To finish, we have the soulful epic Porgy and Bess. What better way to get you rising up singing?
