Contacting the press
It is such a huge achievement for a child to gain a place in the NCO that we should all shout about it!
Getting in touch with the media is a fantastic way to tell the world (...or at least your local area) how proud you are of being a member of the NCO. We would really love you to spread the NCO word as loudly and widely as possible and to gain some well-earned recognition for your own achievement in gaining a place. To help you do this we have created two completely customisable press release templates for you to download.
Press release for new NCO members 2012
Press release for existing NCO members 2012
There is also a special news release for those members taking part in The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations – a fantastic event to shout about!

We are very keen for you to make these releases your own so feel free to add your own personal touch. What are you most looking forward to about your year with the NCO? Do you have any fun stories about your NCO experience or learning your instruments? Have a go at customising the headline too. Exciting, striking headlines are sure to grab people's attention – especially if you mention your local area!
The best way to contact the press is to send your release by email. You can send this through in the body of an email and even attach a link to a picture if you would like – simple! The contact details for each organisation are normally easily accessible on their website. You can send your release to the newsroom or, if they have a more suitable department (eg. arts or community), you could send it directly to that department. You can also send your press release by post, although this is becoming less common. Whichever way you choose to send the information, do follow up with a phone call to ensure your release has been received and read.
If you are stuck for ideas about which newspapers or radio stations to contact, the following sites have lots of useful information, from how many there are in your area to how many listeners or readers each station or publication attracts:
Don't forget that your school is bound to be just as proud of your achievement as you are. Why not send a copy of the release to your school office/headteacher so that they can include it in a newsletter or publish it on your school's website? They may also be able to help you with contacting your local press.
